See below to help calculate the ideal downrod length. Made for rooms with high ceilings typically 8 feet or higher. Proper downrod length for higher than normal ceilings. Check the packaging to see if the downrod is included and note the size.

If your ceiling is at least 8 high you may want to consider a fan with a short downrod rather than a flush mounted fan. For example if your ceiling is 12 feet high and your ceiling fan is 12 inches in height you will need a 24 inch downrod to mount the ceiling fan between eight and nine feet above the floor. This is a fan without a downrod. For taller ceilings many fan manufacturers suggest dropping a ceiling fan all the way down to 8 to 9 feet from floor level.

Ceiling height in feet minus 9 includes the fan height downrod length for example if your ceiling is 12 high you will need a 3 downrod to ensure the fan is positioned at the proper height. This keeps the fan at least 7 above the floor and still provides for good air flow.
